Roberto Clemente Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,115

Official National League (Giles) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente. This is not only a high-grade Clemente single-signed ball but one of the most unique examples we have ever seen due to the manner in which he has inscribed it. Eschewing his normal custom of inscribing a side panel, Clemente here has used the sweet spot for his salutation, which reads “To Alonna McClure – Best Wishes.” Apparently, Clemente felt there wasn’t enough room to place his signature directly below, so instead he has scripted his first name, “Roberto” off to one side, with much of the signature occupying the west panel. His surname is scripted in a similar manner on the opposite side, with most of it located on the east panel. Despite the unusual separation, both parts of his blue-ink signature are visible when directly viewing the sweet spot and each portion grades “9.” Due to his untimely death in 1972 at the age of thirty-eight, Clemente single-signed baseballs are particularly rare and, of course, extremely desirable. In recent years it has been discovered that many Clemente signatures, formerly universally accepted as authentic, were actually signed by an employee, making truly authentic Clemente signed balls such as this example all the rarer. The ball displays a few very small, light areas of age toning and is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,115
