1956 Brooklyn Dodgers National League Champions Team-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,525
Outstanding, high-grade Brooklyn Dodgers team-signed ball dating from the club's 1956 pennant-winning season. The exceptional condition of this ball is directly related to its provenance. The ball originates from the personal collection of a gentleman who was the bat boy for the Chicago Cubs from 1955 through 1958 and has been consigned to this auction directly by his daughter. The ball has remained in the family's sole possession these past fifty-three years and is new to the hobby. (The other twelve 1950s team-signed balls from this remarkable collection are offered elsewhere in this auction.) Many 1950s Dodgers team balls have secretarial signatures (in many cases for key players such as Jackie Robinson, Campy, and Reese). In addition to its stellar condition, this signed ball is all the more noteworthy in that it has no secretarial signatures. The official National League (Giles) ball has been signed in blue ink by the following twenty-five members of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers: Alston (Mgr., sweet spot), Robinson, Campanella, Reese, Snider, Koufax, Drysdale, Herman (coach), Hodges, Newcombe, Cimoli, Bessent, Roebuck, Amoros, Jackson, Maglie, Erskine, Furillo, Howell (sweet spot), Gilliam, Craig, Fernandez, Walker, Lehman, and Neal. All of the signatures grade either "8" or "9" and the ball is in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $3,525
