Remarkable 1955 Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Ball - Clemente's Rookie Season

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $3,231

Incredible high-grade Pittsburgh Pirates team ball dating from Clemente's rookie season of 1955. The ball's remarkable condition is directly related to its provenance. The ball originates from the personal collection of a gentleman who was the bat boy for the Chicago Cubs from 1955 through 1958 and has been consigned to this auction directly by his daughter. The ball has remained in the family's sole possession these past fifty-four years and is new to the hobby. (The other twelve 1950s team-signed balls from this remarkable collection are offered elsewhere in this auction.) The Official National League (Giles) ball is signed in black ink by the following twenty-five members of the 1955 Pittsburgh Pirates: Clemente, Haney (Mgr., sweet spot), Fitzpatrick (coach, sweet spot), Kline, Shepard, Freese, Saffell, Ward, Littlefield, Hall, Face, Martin, Law, Donoso, Mejias, Atwell, Pepper, Lynch, E. O'Brien, Friend, Cole, J. O'Brien, Thomas, Swanson, and Surkront. One of the interesting aspects of this ball is the fact that Clemente has scripted his name in the ideal standard fashion (first and last name on the same plane) rather than placing his first name above his last (the manner in which he normally signed throughout his career following his rookie season). All of the signatures are boldly scripted and average "9/10." Near Mint condition. This is certainly one of the finest Pitttsburgh Pirates team balls in existence dating from Clemente's historic rookie season and the best example we have ever seen. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,231
