Exceptional Pair of 1950s National League All-Star Team-Signed Balls
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233
Two wonderfully preserved National League All-Star team-signed balls dating from the 1955 and 1956 seasons, respectively. The outstanding condition of these balls is directly related to their provenance. Both have been consigned to this auction from the daughter of a gentleman who was the batboy for the Cubs from 1955 through 1958. They have remained in the family's possession since that time and each ball is also accompanied by its original Spalding bag. (The other eleven 1950s team-signed balls from this remarkable collection are offered elsewhere in this auction.) Further distinguishing the balls is the fact that both are remarkably complete; the only player missing from the 1955 ball is Roy Campanella, while Del Crandall is the lone absentee on the 1956 ball. 1955 National League All-Star Team-Signed Ball: Twenty-eight blue-ink signatures on a creamy toned official National League (Giles) ball: Hank Aaron, Luis Arroyo, Gene Baker, Ernie Banks, Smokey Burgess, Gene Conley, Del Crandall, Durocher (Mgr., sweet spot, the signature is stamped as was the custom with nearly all Durocher signatures on team-signed balls from this era), Del Ennis, Harvey Haddix, Fred Haney (coach), Gil Hodges, Randy Jackson, Sam Jones, Ted Kluszewski (sweet spot), Johnny Logan, Stan Lopata, Eddie Mathews, Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Stan Musial, Don Newcombe, Joe Nuxhall, Robin Roberts, Red Schoendienst, Mayo Smith (coach), Duke Snider, and Frank Thomas. All of the signatures have been boldly penned and grade "9" or "10" with the exception of Mays and Mueller (slightly faded, each grading "6"). Near Mint condition. 1956 National League All-Star Team-Signed Ball: Twenty-eight blue-ink signatures on a creamy toned official National League (Giles) ball: Hank Aaron, Walter Alston (Mgr., sweet spot), Johnny Antonelli, Ed Bailey, Ernie Banks, Gus Bell, Ken Boyer, Roy Campanella, Bob Friend, Jim Gilliam, Fred Hutchinson (coach), Ted Kluszewski (sweet spot), Clem Labine, Brooks Lawrence, Dale Long, Stan Lopata, Eddie Mathews, Willie Mays, Roy McMillan, Stan Musial, Joe Nuxhall, Rip Repulski, Robin Roberts, Frank Robinson, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, Birdie Tebbetts (coach, sweet spot), and Johnny Temple. Signatures range in grade from "8" to "10" (averaging "9") with the exception of Mathews and Spahn (mild bleeding and fading, each grading "5/6"). One would be hard pressed to find two finer signed All-Star baseball examples from these two years. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,233
