1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Lave Cross
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example! Extraordinary ultra high grade Mayo's example of third baseman Lave Cross of the Philadelphia Phillies. This is an amazing card, one of the highest-graded Mayo's Cut Plug tobacco cards ever. Of the almost 800 Mayo's of all players combined ever graded to date by SGC, only three have been graded higher (one NM+ 86 and two NM-MT 88), and only eight (including this example) have ever been graded at this same NM 84 level. Bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back, with virtually no chipping on the black borders, the tiniest hint of white to the square corner tips, and perfectly centered. The reverse is perfectly clean with the tiniest pinpoint chip of white wear towards the bottom edge and the slightest edge wear along the right.
Cross was a major star who played twenty-one seasons in the Major Leagues (1887-1907). His best year was in 1894 when he batted .386, with 204 hits, and 125 RBIs. This is a striking high-grade example, literally one of the finest in the world, of one of the significant stars of the era from the extremely condition-sensitive Mayo's set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
