Vintage Multi-Signed Hall of Fame Ball With Foxx, DiMaggio, Clarke, and Walsh (15 HOFers)

Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in either blue or black ink by the following fifteen deceased Hall of Fame players: Jimmie Foxx ("6"), Ed Walsh ("5/6"), Fred Clarke (sweet spot, "3"), Lefty Grove (sweet spot, "2"), Gabby Hartnett ("5"), Mickey Cochrane ("5"), Carl Hubbell ("5"), Dazzy Vance ("5"), Joe DiMaggio ("4"), Paul Waner ("5/6/"), Harry Hooper ("4"), Frank Baker ("3"), Ted Lyons ("3"), Lefty Gomez ("5"), and Charlie Gehringer ("5/6"). This ball is unique in a number of ways, for not only does it feature the signatures of only Hall of Fame players (most vintage balls of this nature usually include signatures of non-Hall of Fame players as well) but, according to our consignor, it once belonged to Ed Walsh. Oral history relates that Walsh signed this ball and then obtained the other fourteen signatures at a Yankees Old Timers Day game in the late 1950s. Approximately a decade later, a Connecticut attorney (Walsh lived in Meriden, Connecticut) received this ball from Walsh's son in exchange for legal services. Our consignor, also a Connecticut resident, obtained the ball directly from the attorney. While we have no way of verifying the ball's provenance, sometimes a story about an item just rings true, and that is certainly the case here, and in our opinion this story adds to the intrigue of what is already an exceptionally desirable and unique signed item. The moderately toned ball displays a very light, uneven, layer of protective shellac and is in Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
