1946 Toots Shor Restaurant Menu Signed by Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25
Dinner menu from Toots Shor Restaurant in New York City, for the night of September 11, 1946, signed in pencil (“10”) on the cover by Babe Ruth. Toots Shor Restaurant, which was located on 51 West 51st Street, was one of New York’s legendary watering holes for the celebrities and sporting figures during the 1940s and 1950s. Owner Toots Shor was especially partial to ballplayers, so one can imagine the royal treatment Ruth received when he dined there. Although Shor always sought to keep his celebrity clientele shielded from fans and autograph seekers, nothing could keep fans away from Babe Ruth, and nothing could keep Ruth from accommodating his fans. This autograph request was honored using whatever was handy, which in this case was a Toots Shore Restaurant menu. The establishment did not normally let their menus walk out the door but on this occasion, with good reason, they obviously made a special exception. This program originates from the famed Barry Halper Collection and was sold in 1999 with the majority of his baseball memorabilia. It has been consigned by that winning bidder and is accompanied by the original Barry Halper Collection property certificate that was issued sent at the time of purchase. The fold-over menu measures 10 x 13.5 inches and is in Very Good condition overall, with a few light creases, but with an overall Excellent appearance. This is an unusual and attractive Ruth signed item originating from one of New York’s fabled celebrity “Hot Spots.” LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
