1946-1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Autographed Scrapbook Including Jackie Robinson in His Rookie Year (92 Signatures)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00

On Wednesday, September 18, 1946, the Brooklyn Dodgers hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at Ebbets Field. Prior to that game, a young man by the name of John Kilmas began the compilation of an incredible autograph album, which we are proud to offer here. What sets this autograph album apart from the many others we have seen is the inclusion of snapshot photos of many of the players. Ideally, most of the photos picture the respective player signing this very album! Nearly all of the album pages are also date stamped, so we know exactly when the album was signed. Kilmas returned to Ebbets Field on the 19th (Pirates) and the 20th (Reds) to continue his quest for autographs, and it was on his final trip that he took the photos displayed in the album (later mounted on the proper pages with the given player's signature). He also returned the following spring (April 22, 1947, is the date listed for many of the autographs), at which time he collected many additional signatures, including that of Jackie Robinson during his rookie season. In total, ninety-two signatures are featured in the book, the vast majority of which belong to members of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The signatures from September 18th and 19th (twelve total) were originally obtained on a scorecard and then later cut and affixed to the pages of the album, otherwise all of the signatures have been scripted directly upon one of the album pages. A number of pages include more than one signature and a few players are represented more than once. The players whose signature appears alongside a snapshot photo (each signature and corresponding photo on a single album page, all from September 20, 1946) are the following: Ed Stevens, Pee Wee Reese, Gene Hermanski, Carl Furillo, Howie Schultz, Ralph Branca, Kirby Higbe, Eddie Stanky, Joe Medwick, Dixie Walker, Farrel Anderson, Dick Whitman, Paul Minner, Al Lakeman (Cincinnati Reds), Clay Lambert (Cincinnati Reds), and Ed Heusser (Cincinnati Reds). The additional 1946 signatures in the album are those of Eddie Shokes (Reds), Ewell Blackwell (Reds), Eddie Stevens, Hank Behrman, Al Gerheauser (Pirates), Elbe Fletcher (Pirates), Hank Camelli (Pirates), Lee Howard (Pirates), Nick Strincevich (Pirates), Lee Handley (Pirates), Pete Reiser, Stan Rojeck, Chuck Dressen, and Hal Gregg. The signatures dating from 1947 are those of Jackie Robinson (alone on a single page), Bobby Bragan, John Jorgensen (3), Pete Reiser, Arky Vaughan, Tom Tatum, Don Lund (2), Wayne Johnson, Ralph Branca, Gene Hermanski, Dixie Howell, Frank McCormick (Phillies), Dutch Leonard (Phillies), Lee Handley (Phillies), Eddie Chandler, Tommy Brown, Cookie Lavagetto (2), Stan Rojek, Cal McLish, Andy Seminick (Phillies), Ken Raffensberger (Phillies), Burt Shotton, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider (2), Rube Melton, Dixie Walker, Rex Barney, Hank Behman, Hugh Casey, Schoolboy Rowe (Phillies), Benny Culp, Eddie Stanky, Gene Mauch (Pirates), Hank Borowy (Cubs), Stan Hack (Cubs), Bill Nicholson (Cubs), Paul Erickson (Cubs), Eddie Waitkus (2, Cubs), Tommy Brown, Bob Chipman (Cubs), Bob Sturgeon (Cubs), Red Barber (announcer), Clyde Sukeforth, Hank Wyse (Cubs), Hank Schenz (Cubs), Harry Taylor, Clyde King, Joe Hatten, Marv Rickert (Cubs), Don Johnson (Cubs), Vic Lombardi, Marv Rackley, Jake Pitler, Bob Scheffing (Cubs), Johnny Schmitz (Cubs), and one other (illegible). All of the signatures have been penned in either blue or black fountain pen and range in grade from “8” to “10,” with the exception of one of the Dixie Walker signatures (pencil). The leather-bound album (6.25 x 4.75 inches) displays moderate wear to the covers and is in Excellent condition overall. The former owner’s name and address is stamped on both interior covers and on one of the pages. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
