1940 Play Ball Signed Card Collection (DiMaggio, Gomez, Ruffing, and Combs)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Collection of four vintage-signed different 1940 Play Ball cards, each inscribed in black fountain pen by the respective player pictured: Joe DiMaggio, Earl Combs, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez. Each card has been personally inscribed to the same individual, who, based upon Ruffing’s inscription, was probably a hospitalized or sick young boy. The respective salutations on each card are as follows: “To Donie [sic]– Best Wishes – Joe DiMaggio,” “Good Luck to Donnie – Earle Combs,” “To Donnie – Here’s for a speedy recovery – Best Wishes – Chas. ‘Red’ Ruffing – 1941,” and “To Donald – With Sincerest Best Wishes – Lefty Gomez.” All of the inscriptions and signatures grade “10,” with the exception of Combs (“8”) and the slightest hint of an ink smear on the "L" of "Lefty Gomez". The Gomez card has a tiny corner chip and grades Gd. The other three cards each display light corner and edge wear and grade Vg-Ex overall. Pre-1950 signed baseball cards of any issue are rare and sought-after by collectors, especially those of Hall of Fame players. Signed examples of DiMaggio’s 1940 Play Ball card, which is the most valuable and desirable card in the set, are particularly prized by autograph collectors, and this is a spectacular vintage-signed example. Based on the date of the Ruffing salutation, it is obvious that all of these cards were signed at the same time in 1941. Most Joe D signed 1940 Play Balls were signed in the 1980s or later, rarely circa 1940 as is the case here. This is an exceptional small collection of signed 1940 Play Balls that belong together, just as they have been since 1941. These four signed cards compliment one another, tell a story, and have great potential appeal to many different types of collections. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 4 signed cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
