1940 Joe DiMaggio Hillerich & Bradsby Signed Advertising Display - Ex-Halper Collection
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75
Exceedingly rare 1940 Hillerich & Bradsby advertising poster featuring an illustration of Joe DiMaggio surrounded by comic vignettes relating to his career. This poster was one of the prominently displayed Joe DiMaggio advertising pieces of Barry Halper's famed collection and, like most of his items, has been personalized to Barry. The image of DiMaggio on this piece is a caricature and features his accurately rendered portrait sitting atop a disproportionately small cartoon body. DiMaggio has made light of that portrayal by inscribing the piece, "Barry - Where's the rest of me - Best Wishes Joe DiMaggio." DiMaggio's blue-Sharpie inscription grades "10" and contrasts perfectly against the white backdrop of the piece. This poster is the forerunner to the classic set of four H&B signs produced in 1947, which were similar in design and featured, respectively, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Johnny Mize, and Mickey Vernon. Because that later-issued set of four advertising signs is so well known by collectors today, many do not realize how rare the offered earlier-issued poster of DiMaggio really is. In fact, to the best of our knowledge, this is the only example of this 1940 H&B DiMaggio poster to ever surface. Barry parted with this piece in 1999 during the historic sale of his collection in New York City, and it is still accompanied by the original auction lot label (affixed to the glass in the lower left corner). The poster (15.5 x 20.5 inches) is printed on cardboard stock and displays a few light creases and surface tears, as well as a few very light scattered stains. All of the flaws are quite unobtrusive and the piece still presents overall as Excellent. Framed to total dimensions of 17 x 22 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
