1939 Babe Ruth Signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Postal Cover
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $7,637.50
1939 Baseball Centennial first-day cover, featuring a portrait illustration of Abner Doubleday (identified as "The Father of Baseball") flawlessly signed in blue fountain pen (grading “10”) by Babe Ruth on the front. This is, without any doubt, one of the finest Ruth signatures we have ever seen, let alone offered. Ruth obviously took special care when signing this envelope, for every single pen stroke has been perfectly scripted and boldly executed. Despite the sheer quantity of Ruth signatures in the hobby today, flawlessly bold and perfect examples such as this are quite rare. Sunlight, handling, and the even the natural reaction between ink and various writing surfaces are among the many contributing factors to the deterioration or naturally flawed state of many vintage signatures. The offered example displays no hint of any of those common problems and displays as brightly and perfectly as the day Ruth signed it. This is a simply remarkable Ruth signature example in all respects and one that will forever defy upgrading. The first-day cover (6.5 x 3.5 inches) is postmarked “Cooperstown N. Y. – Jun 12 1939” and is stamped “First Day Of Issue.” It is addressed to “Raymond S. Card Jr. – c/o Syracuse Trust Co. – 344 South Warren St. – Syracuse, N.Y.” Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $7,637.50
