1937 Babe Ruth Signed Sinclair Radio Script
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50
Five-page 1937 CBS radio script from a Sinclair Refining Company baseball program, signed on the first page by Babe Ruth. The signature, scripted in pencil, includes the salutation, “Sincerely,” and grades a perfect “10.” Only the first five pages of the script are offered here (it is obvious that more pages followed). In the late 1930s the Sinclair Refining Company launched a major promotional campaign with Ruth as its principal spokesperson. The highlight of the promotion was a weekly essay contest for kids that offered hundreds of different prizes, including Ruth-signed baseballs. This script is from a fifteen-minute weekly radio show, hosted by Babe Ruth, that was aired in conjunction with that promotional contest (names of winners were read on the air). A period ink notation along the top reads “This was a night with Babe at Columbia Broadcast System – Only part of the outfit.” This signed radio script once resided in the famed Barry Halper Collection and was sold, along with the majority of his memorabilia, in 1999. The original auction lot sticker is still affixed to the binder in which the script is housed. Each of the pages measures 8.5 x 11 inches with the exception of the first page, which is trimmed along the top and bottom (8.5 x 8.75 inches). All five pages have been individually laminated and are otherwise in Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
