Early Hall of Fame Signature Collection with Young, Ott, and Grove (10)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50
Presented here is a substantial collection of very high quality early Hall of Fame signatures scripted upon a diverse assortment of items including photos, cuts, and checks. All of the signatures in this collection are "better names," Hall of Famers that are not available in quantities as the players passed away before the modern era of collecting, and are generally only found in advanced collections. Each of these signature examples was carefully culled from our consignor’s vast holdings with an eye towards both quality and desirability, and all would merit inclusion in even the most discriminating collections. Unless otherwise noted, all of the signatures grade a perfect “10.” 1) Cy Young. Impressive signature example (measuring four inches in length) scripted in black fountain pen on an unlined 3 x 5-inch card. Ex-Mt. An exceptional highlight, about as good as a Cy Young 3 x 5 could possibly be, and the finest example we have ever seen. 2) Fred Clarke. In blue fountain pen on an unlined 3 x 5-inch card. Ex-Mt. 3) Lefty Grove. In black ink on a 10 x 8-inch photo. Vg-Ex. 4-5) Mel Ott (two signatures). One is in blue ink on a small 3.5 x 2.5 inch cardboard card (the signature was once matted and the card is toned in the unmated area, Nr-Mt). The other is boldly scripted in black fountain pen on a New York Giants lineup page taken from a 1934 scorecard (Vg). 6) Rogers Hornsby. In black fountain pen (“8/9”) on an original Acme Newspictures photo (8.75 x 5.75 inches) – date stamped March 3, 1926 on the reverse. The original news caption remains attached to the reverse. The photo is irregularly trimmed to its current dimensions, otherwise Ex. 7) Kid Nichols. In blue fountain pen on a small 2.75 x .5-inch cut that appears to have been taken from a check or document. The cut is affixed to the base of a 4 x 6-inch 1949 Kid Nichols Day souvenir card (Nr-Mt). 8) Chief Bender. In black fountain pen as part of a return address on the back flap of an envelope: “From ‘Chief Bender – c/o New York ‘Yankees’ – New York City.” Only the flap (7.25 x 2 inches) is offered here. Ex. 9) Mickey Cochrane. In blue ink (“Gordon S. Cochrane”) on a bank check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) dated 4/21/62. With normal bank cancellations and stamps, one of which touches upon the signature, and two light vertical folds. Ex. 10) Al Simmons. In blue ink (“8/9”) on a bank check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) dated 3/21/52. With normal bank cancellations and stamps, one of which touches upon the signature, and three moderate vertical folds. Vg-Ex. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 10 signed items. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
