1930s Babe and Claire Ruth Signed Christmas Card (To Joe Bihler, Ex-Halper Collection)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $9,400.00

Addendum: In the printed catalog (text below), we noted that this Christmas card was the same style as a Ruth Christmas card REA handled in the 1970s direct from the collection of Joe Bihler (secretary to Christy Walsh). All of the material from the Joe Bihler Collection was purchased from REA immediately by legendary collector Barry Halper. Since writing the catalog description for this lot, we were looking through the 1999 Halper Collection catalog, and we happened to find the Joe Bihler Babe Ruth Christmas card. It appeared as Lot 1058. It is the very card offered in this lot!

Outstanding undated Christmas card signed in black fountain pen by Babe Ruth and his wife, Claire. Claire has signed just her first name, which is then followed by Ruth's full-name signature. Both signatures are boldly scripted and grade "9/10." Claire married Babe Ruth in 1929 and they remained in wedlock until his death in 1948. The card (9 x 6 inches, unfolded) is in Near Mint condition and has been beautifully matted and framed together with a non-vintage 9 x 7-inch photo of Ruth handing out presents to children while dressed up as Santa Claus. When we handled material from the Joe Bihler collection (secretary to Christy Walsh) in the mid-1970s, included was a Christmas card from Ruth identical in design to this, and also signed in an identical manner, with an envelope postmarked from the 1930s, leading us to believe that this Christmas card also dates from the 1930s. Total dimensions 14 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
