1934 Tour of Japan Signed Ball with Ruth and Gehrig
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,993.75
In 1934 Connie Mack led a group of Major League players on a highly publicized postseason goodwill Tour of Japan. That much-celebrated tour is especially noteworthy as it was the only overseas tour in which both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig participated. Offered is an outstanding red-and-black stitched ball (no manufacturer’s stampings visible) signed in black fountain pen by ten members of that famous 1934 overseas tour. Babe Ruth's signature majestically graces the sweet spot and grades “7." The other signers are Lou Gehrig ("6,” with moderate smudging), Connie Mack ("6/7," on the opposite sweet spot), Moe Berg ("6"), Earl Averill ("7"), Lefty Gomez ("7"), Bing Miller ("7"), Frank Hayes ("6"), Lefty O’Doul (“6/7”), and John Quinn (“9”). The ball has some very light soiling and a few minor abrasions (some of which touch upon, but do not significantly affect, the signatures, including Ruth’s). This is an very attractive example of one of the great classics among all signed baseballs, with a particularly strong display value due to the very impressive and bold Babe Ruth sweet-spot signature. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
