Babe Ruth Signed Photograph With Personalization Blocked
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Early 1920s photograph of Babe Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees, inscribed in black fountain pen "To My Friend ____ Sincerely Babe Ruth." Both the inscription and signature have been boldly penned and grade "9" overall. Unfortunately, we don't know the name of Ruth's friend due to the fact that the original recipient's name has been covered with a white paper strip that is lettered "N.Y. Yankees" in black ink. It appears that it may be possible to remove the added paper strip, which has obviously been added to ensure the privacy of the recipient, but we cannot guarantee this and are leaving the photograph framed, exactly as it was originally purchased by our consignor. It displays beautifully exactly as is. Based upon the uniform style worn by Ruth here, this photo was taken in either 1920 or 1921, which were his first two seasons with the Yankees. However, the fact that Ruth has not bracketed the "Babe" portion of his signature with parenthesis indicates that the photo was signed at a later date (Ruth discontinued the practice of including parenthesis around "Babe" sometime after 1928). Interestingly, we have seen another example of this same photograph with identical dimensions personalized and signed by Ruth, suggesting that it is likely that copies of this photograph may have been produced for and personally distributed by Babe Ruth. The photo (3.75 x 9.25 inches) displays two small tears (one on Ruth's chest, the other on his left sleeve, no paper loss) that do not significantly detract from its overall Excellent appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 8.5 x 14 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
