Circa 1925 World Series Attributed Multi-Signed Baseball with Ruth, Cobb, and Johnson
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,993.75
Official American League (Johnson) ball, dating from the 1910-1925 manufacturing period, signed in black fountain pen by nine of the most famous ballplayers of the era: Babe Ruth (“7”), Ty Cobb (“5”), Walter Johnson (6”), George Sisler (“9”), Eddie Collins (“8”), Bucky Harris (signed “Stanley Harris” across the sweet spot, “6”), Tris Speaker (“5”), Harry Heilmann ("2/3"), and Nick Altrock (“6”). The side panel signature of Ruth is particularly striking, displaying very impressively between the official American League ball stampings and the signature of Eddie Collins. While we will never know for certain, it is very possible (in our opinion likely) that this ball was signed at either the 1924 or 1925 World Series. Washington played against New York in the 1924 World Series, and against Pittsburgh in the 1925 World Series. That would explain why Harris’ signature (he was player/manager of the Washington Senators) is on the sweet spot as opposed to Ruth. It would also account for Altrock’s and Johnson’s signatures (members of the Senators), as well as those of Ruth, Cobb, and Sisler, all of whom were in attendance at both Series in an official capacity as part of the Christy Walsh Syndicate (a sports writing syndicate). Whatever the circumstances of its signing, it remains an outstanding vintage-signed ball from the era featuring eight significant Hall of Fame players. The ball is lightly soiled and all of the manufacturer’s labels are clearly legible. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2000+. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
