1930 Mordecai Brown Endorsed Check
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00
Company dividend check, issued by the Kelly Farm Oil Company to Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, endorsed by Brown on the reverse. This is the only Mordecai Brown check we have ever seen. The check, dated November 12, 1930, and drawn on the Farmers State Bank of Lawrenceville, Illinois, is made out to Mordecai Brown in the amount of $200 and is signed by the appropriate company official on the front. Brown has magnificently endorsed the check on the reverse in black fountain pen (grading a perfect “10”). Written on the front of the check is the notation “Dividend 1/8 interest.” Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity and this example is no exception. The signature of Brown, who passed away in 1948, is rare in any form and highly prized by collectors today. Authenticity and rarity factors not withstanding, this check is even more significant due to the fact that, to date, no Mordecai Brown personal checks have ever surfaced within the hobby. Therefore, in the specialized field of check collecting, the offered example represents the best alternative with regard to Brown. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellations and perforations as well as a tiny amount of clear tape residue along both the reverse right and left borders (from having been previously mounted). Without reference to the tape residue (barely noticeable) the check is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
