1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Bill Joyce
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example! Outstanding ultra high grade Mayo example of center fielder Bill Joyce of the Washington Nationals. This is one of the highest-graded Mayo's Cut Plug tobacco cards ever. Out of almost eight-hundred N300 Mayo's, of all players combined, ever graded to date by SGC, only eight Mayo's have ever been graded at the NM 84 level (three of which appear in this auction), and only three examples have ever been graded higher (one NM+ 86 and two NM-MT 88). Bright, crisp, and clean with virtually no chipping on the black borders, a hint of wear to the square corners, flawless surface and bold portrait, and centered very slightly to the right. The reverse is perfectly clean with only a tiny hint of white towards the bottom edge and the slightest hint of white along the extreme right edge. After three ordinary seasons in three different leagues, Joyce sat out 1893 in a contract dispute but returned as one of the game's biggest sluggers with Washington in 1894, hitting seventeen home runs (the first of three seasons with fourteen or more homers, a huge feat at this time), and a career-high .355, the first of four consecutive .300 seasons. In 1896, he tied Ed Delahanty for the home run crown. This is a very striking high-grade example from one of the most important of all nineteenth-century sets and one of the most condition-sensitive of all card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
