1928 Ty Cobb Signed Japan-Tour Photo
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Original snapshot photograph of Ty Cobb, taken during a 1928 barnstorming tour of Japan, signed by the famed "Georgia Peach" atop his image. Cobb’s signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades “9.” This extremely rare photo (3 x 4 inches) captures Cobb dressed in a "Daimai" uniform as he poses next to an unidentified gentleman. Cobb, along with Bob Shawkey, headed a Major League barnstorming tour of Japan in the fall of 1928. The tour was for a series of twelve games against the Daimai ball club. We have only seen one other signed photo of Cobb from this little-known tour, which predates by just a few years the famous World Tours of the 1930s. Photographs signed by Ruth from the 1934 Tour of Japan are classics, but are not even in the same league in terms of rarity compared to 1928 Tour photographs (let alone examples that are signed by the star draw, Ty Cobb). A signed photo (3 x 4.5 inches) of umpire “Beans” Reardon, taken on the same tour, accompanies the Cobb photo. Reardon is pictured posing in front of the dugout and has signed the photo, “J. E. Reardon” in black fountain pen (grading “9.”) The Cobb photo displays some very minor hints of flaking to the surface and is in Excellent condition. The Reardon photo is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
