1922 New York Giants Team-Signed Ball with Ross Youngs

Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Official National League (Heydler) ball signed in black ink by the following thirteen members of the 1922 World Champion New York Giants (including five Hall of Famers): John McGraw (Mgr., sweet spot, “2”), Hughie Jennings (coach, sweet spot, “2”), Ross Youngs (“1”) Frankie Frisch (“4”), Dave Bancroft (“5”), Johnny Rawlings (“4”), Frank Snyder (“4”), Heinie Groh (“7”), Bill Cunningham (‘7”), Irish Meusel (‘8”), Earl Smith (“2”), Alex Gaston (“3”), and one other (badly faded, possibly Ralph Shinners). The vintage black ink notation “March 22nd – 1922 – N.Y. Giants” appears on a side panel. Scripted below the notation, also in black ink, is the name “Jim Antonio” (most likely the name of the original owner). The signature of Ross Youngs, featured on this ball, is rare in any form. Youngs was one of the top outfielders of his day, but he passed away prematurely in 1927 at the age of thirty. The signatures of Jennings and McGraw are also particularly rare. The Giants 1922 World Series victory over the Yankees marked not only the club's second consecutive World Championship, but also the last World Championship for manager John McGraw, who eventually retired ten years later in 1932. Team-signed balls from the early 1920s are rare. The ball is moderately soiled and displays a number of small abrasions. The manufacturer's stampings display well. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
