1910 Christy Mathewson Won in The Ninth Signed Presentation Edition

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,400.00

1910 special signed presentation hardcover first edition of Won in The Ninth by Christy Mathewson. This Christy Mathewson signed book features a special bookplate signed by Mathewson affixed to the interior cover. Mathewson's signature is boldly scripted in black fountain pen and grades "9/10." The original recipient's name, “Mr. M. E. Webb, Jr.,” is printed on the bookplate, as is the presentation number, “295.” It is unknown exactly how many special presentation copies of this book Mathewson signed (we have always thought the total to be either 300 or 500); however, it is interesting to note that of the few examples we have handled, this is the highest-numbered copy we have ever seen. Very few of these signed presentation books have survived, making the unlikely discovery of this particular example all the more extraordinary. Our consignor (a noncollector) discovered it at a garage sale, where it was sold as just an old book. Only later did she realized that this was a signed presentation copy. When purchased, the book contained a few loose period papers relating to the Yale-Princeton baseball rivalry, which are included here. This is the ideal signed Mathewson presentation book, as it is the only title authored by Mathewson that features a photograph of him on the cover, making it ideal for display. The 298-page book of baseball fiction has a special instructional section in the back. Published in 1910 by the R. J. Bodmer Company of New York. The covers display moderate wear, including a number of light abrasions, and there is a dark stain running along the spine. The pages remain clean and bright. Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
