1960 Post Cereal Complete Set Plus Three Duplicates (12)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00 , Sold For - $7,050.00

Presented is an extraordinary and extremely rare complete set of nine 1960 Post Cereal cards, plus an additional three duplicates, for a total of 12 cards. This is a remarkable find. When the gentleman who called us with these told us what he had, we were excited to hear about a set (plus a few duplicates) in any condition, but because of their method of issue, on the backs of cereal boxes, these are rarely seen in high grade. When this package arrived, we were overwhelmed. For this rare package design issue, these cards are spectacular. We are told by our consignor that these cards were purchased from a gentleman who saved these cards personally when issued and cut them out in 1960. He had quite a few others years ago, which he long ago sold, but saved the very best, which are presented here. Aside from a miracle set we had over twenty years ago that is the only set known still uncut on original boxes, this set is the very best set we have ever handled. 1960 Post Cereals have always been the "King" of all Post Cereal cards. They are large, beautiful, and rare not just because they were issued only one card per box; they are just rare, and this was the first year of issue for Post Cereal baseball cards. They were obviously issued on a very limited basis, and the set was successful enough to encourage Post to issue 200-card sets in the three following years. In the "old days" of the organized hobby, 1960 Post were always known for their mythic rarity, and were among the most valuable cards of the era. In recent years, with all the emphasis on graded cards, both larger-format cards and hand-cut cards have received very little attention. 1960 Post may be a little overlooked in today's marketplace, but it is one of the great classic sets of the era. 1960 Post Cereal are full-color large-format cards (7 x 8.75 inches). The set includes stars from several sports. Issued one card per box on the backs of boxes of Post Cereal, they were intended to be carefully cut from the boxes by youngsters in exactly the same manner as Wheaties cards were in the 1930s. 1960 Post cards were the first, and by far the rarest, of the Post cereal issues of the early 1960s. The set features the following Hall of Famers from several sports: Mickey Mantle (light wrinkle along the bottom on the back, otherwise Nr/Mt), Ed Mathews (Ex-Mt), Harmon Killebrew (Ex), Al Kaline (Vg-Ex), Don Drysdale (Ex), Johnny Unitas (light moisture stain in the upper left background, otherwise Vg-Ex), Frank Gifford (Ex-Mt), Bob Cousy (Vg), and Bob Petit (Ex-Mt). Three additional duplicates: Killebrew (pencil mark on back, otherwise Ex), Gifford (light wrinkle along the bottom on the back, otherwise Ex), and Petit (tiny tack hole to the right of his leg, otherwise Ex). Some cards have a shading on the reverse from the glue which assembles the cereal boxes, which is natural to these cards. The beautiful photography and rich color of 1960 Post Cereal cards make this issue one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1960s cards. This is a very strong complete set (plus three duplicates) of one of the most substantial and rarest all 1960s sets. Total 12 cards (Complete set of nine plus three duplicates). Reserve $1,500. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $7,050.00
