1956 UM8 Big League Stars Statue Cards - Near-Complete Set (17/18)

Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00

This unusual and rare near-complete set of 1956 Big League Stars Statues cards produced by Big League, Inc., of New York includes seventeen different of the eighteen cards in the set, missing only Mantle for completion. This very rare package design set is catalogued UM8 in the American Card Catalog . A small white statue of each ballplayer was originally issued with each card. The toy statue was trapped in a plastic bubble which was part of the special design of these unusual fold over package design cards. This outstanding near-complete collection includes seventeen of the eighteen cards in the set (the package design card only, no statues) including Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Larry Doby, Bob Lemon, Eddie Mathews, Stan Musial, Pee Wee Reese, and Duke Snider. Also included are Gil Hodges, Minnie Minoso, Al Rosen, Johnny Antonelli, Del Ennis, Junior Gilliam, Mickey Vernon, Bobby Avilia, and Harvey Kuenn. These are rarely seen at all, especially in such fine condition. We believe these were issued exclusively in toy and novelty stores in the New York area. Because they are so unusual and rare, these cards have never been on the radar of most collectors, but really have as much merit as many of the most popular (and more common) 1950s regional issues of the decade. All are in overall Very Good or better condition (with the exception of Doby and Avilla, which are Good). This is an outstanding collection of this very attractive, extremely rare, and very much overlooked 1950s issue. Total 17 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
