1955 Red Man Complete PSA-Graded Set (50)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $3,818.75

Extraordinary high-grade complete set of all fifty cards (all with tabs) from the 1955 Red Man Tobacco series, entirely graded and encapsulated by PSA. This was the last of the four Red Man sets issued from 1952 to 1955. Red Man Tobacco cards are among the most beautiful cards ever issued and also represent one of the best values of all cards from the 1950s. These cards have long been a special favorite of collectors, and with good reason: They are far rarer than Topps issues from the era; they are unusual; they are relatively small sets; and each set includes so many great stars from the golden era of the early 1950s. The fact that Red Man cards are very challenging to collect in high grade gives them a mystique and all the greater appeal to serious collectors. Red Man Tobacco cards are never going out of style with advanced collectors and a case could be made that with grading (holders for Red Mans are relatively new) they are just beginning to be discovered by many serious collectors. Red Man cards do not get a lot of attention compared to Topps and Bowman, but are one of the premier sets of the 1950s. Our consignor is a longtime collector who has always especially appreciated the 1955 Red Man set. The offered set is the result of many years of collecting effort and upgrading. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set includes eighteen NM 7s, twenty-five EX-MT 6s, six EX 5s, and one VG-EX 4. The assembly of this set in such high grade is no small feat. Because of their tabs (which were designed to be cut) and method of issue, Red Man Tobacco cards often have serious condition problems, and are usually found without tabs. A set of this extraordinary quality can only be assembled as a result of a labor of love, combined with a lot of hard work. Fortunately, the work is done; the set is complete; and all are graded. It is now time for the torch to be passed on this outstanding collecting achievement. This is a magnificent set. The PSA grades are as follows: Eighteen NM 7: #1A, 4A Fox (HOF), 4N, 9N, 13A, 13N, 16N Kluszewski, 17A, 17N Reese (HOF), 18A Doby (HOF), 18N Schoendienst (HOF), 19A, 19N Snider (HOF), 21N, 23A, 24N, 25A, and 25N. Twenty-Five EX-MT 6: 1N Ashburn (HOF), 2A, 2N, 3A Ford (HOF), 3N Hodges, 5N, 6N, 7A, 7N Mays (HOF), 8A Lemon (HOF), 8N, 10A, 11A, 11N, 12A, 12N Wilhelm (HOF), 14A Wynn (HOF), 14N, 15A, 15N, 20A, 22A, 22N, 23N, and 24A. Six EX 5: #5A, 6A, 9A, 10N Spahn (HOF), 20N, and 21A. One VG-EX 4: #16A Berra (HOF). This is a simply outstanding high grade set of this striking and unusual issue, easily the finest we have ever handled, and one that based on current guide prices we can't help but think represents an extraordinary value compared to the value of most other cards from the 1950s. The total SMR value for the fifty individual cards is $2,930. Total 50 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
