1893 Just So Tobacco F. W. Boyd
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00
Newly discovered example of Just So Tobacco, featuring F. W. Boyd, and graded "Authentic" by SGC. This card was very recently discovered (in 2006) in upstate New York. It had long ago been neatly trimmed to fit inside a small photo album, where it had been stored for decades until its recent discovery. This is a remarkable find, even with the bottom of the card clipped. There are fewer than twenty-five Just So Tobacco cards known to exist in the entire world and the discovery of even a low-grade example is very significant. Issued in 1893, Just So Tobacco cards are one of the most unusual and obscure nineteenth-century baseball card issues. Featuring portraits of the Cleveland Spiders, as they were known at the time, cards from this set are legendary for their incredible rarity. They are very distinctive both in size (measuring 2.5 x 3.875 inches) as well as in their very close to black-and-white real-photo appearance. The 1890s were a very slow decade for baseball-card sets. Just So Tobacco is one of the very few issues of the era, adding to its significance to collectors. Offered is almost certainly the only baseball card of catcher Frank Boyd ever issued. Boyd played just two games over the course of a single day in the Major Leagues. He debuted on May 18, 1893, and his final game was May 19, 1893. He had five at-bats, one hit (a double), three RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk. And he appeared on a Just So Tobacco baseball card! Not a bad tally for just twenty-four hours for this young ballplayer. This is a very attractive low-grade example of this extraordinary rarity. The card is neatly clipped along the bottom (missing most but not all of the lettering of the advertisement which reads "Chew or Smoke Just So"). The card displays bold contrast, and, aside from being clipped, also has a small hole in the center, and pencil notations on the reverse. Just So Tobacco cards are virtually nonexistent in the marketplace. This card represents an interesting, unique, and very rare opportunity for a collector to acquire an almost never offered example, with significant flaws but still very attractive, of one of card collecting's most legendary sample-card rarities. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,525.00
