1952 Topps Complete Set (407 plus variation plus 72 low-number back variations)

Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $26,437.50

1952 Topps complete set of 407 cards (plus #48b Page error plus 72 low-number black-back variations for a total of 480 cards). This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a complete set of 1952 Topps, the premier postwar gum-card set, without spending the fortune that this set would cost in a higher grade, or the considerably higher amount that it would almost certainly cost to put this set together one card at a time. This is an extremely attractive, very carefully assembled, very clean, fairly high grade set, rarely offered this nice as a complete set, and with many rare high-numbers and most key cards in fairly high grade. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This particular set was assembled one card at a time by a very prominent old-time collector in the 1970s and has been consigned directly by him. The low-numbers (#1-310) grade as follows: 83% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and 17% Vg (with a few slightly lesser). The rare high-numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 38% range from Vg-Ex to Ex, 62% range from Fair to Vg (mostly Gd-Vg). We have selected eighteen cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Low-Number Keys (#1-310): #1 Pafko (PSA EX 5), 2 Runnels (Vg), 11 Rizzuto (PSA EX 5), 20 Loes RC (Ex), 22 DiMaggio (Vg), 26 Irvin (Vg), 29 Kluszewski (Ex-Mt), 33 Spahn (Vg-Ex/Ex), 36 Hodges (Vg), 37 Snider (Vg), 48 Page/correct (75/25 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 48b Page/error (Gd-Vg), 49 Sain/correct (Vg-Ex), 57 Lopat (Ex-Mt), 59 Roberts (Ex), 65 Slaughter (Ex/Ex-Mt), 66 Roe (Ex-Mt), 67 Reynolds (Ex), 88 Feller (Vg-Ex/Ex), 91 Schoendienst (Vg-Ex), 122 Jensen (Ex-Mt), 129 Mize (Vg), 175 Martin RC (PSA EX-MT 6), 191 Berra (Gd-Vg), 195 Minoso RC (Vg), 215 Bauer (Gd-Vg), 216 Ashburn (ink mark on back, otherwise Vg-Ex), 227 Garagiola (PSA EX-MT 6), 243 Doby (Vg), 246 Kell (Vg), 250 Erskine (Vg-Ex/Ex), 261 Mays (PSA GOOD 2), 268 Lemon (PSA VG-EX 4), 274 Branca (Ex), and 277 Wynn (Vg-Ex). High-Number Keys (#311-407): #311 Mantle (PSA VG 3), 312 Robinson (PSA VG 3), 313 Thomson (Vg-Ex), 314 Campanella (PSA EX 5), 315 Durocher (PSA EX 5), 321 Black RC (Gd-Vg), 326 Shuba (PSA EX-MT 6), 333 Reese (PSA PR-FR 1), 342 Labine RC (Ex), 344 Blackwell (Gd), 347 Adcock (Vg-Ex), 351 Dark (Vg), 353 High # (PSA EX 5), 357 Burgess (Vg), 369 Groat RC (Gd-Vg), 372 McDougald RC (PSA EX 5), 382 Jones RC (Vg-Ex/Ex), 384 Crosetti (PSA VG-EX 4), 392 Wilhelm RC (PSA VG-EX 4), 394 Herman (Gd-Vg), 396 Williams RC (Vg), 397 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 400 Dickey (Vg), 406 Nuxhall RC (Vg), and 407 Mathews (PSA GOOD 2). Also included with the set, as noted above, are an additional seventy-two low-numbers (#1-80) representing the red- or black-back variations of these cards (Note: without reference to whether the card is red or black on the back, the better condition card of each card number is reflected in the primary condition composite above). The amazing thing about a quality mid- to high-grade 1952 Topps set such as this is the outstanding value it offers compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a rarely offered, very pleasing mixed-grade complete set of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues, with numerous significant highlights. Total 480 cards (complete of 407, plus one variation, plus 72 low-number back variations). Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $26,437.50
