1949 Bowman Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00 , Sold For - $10,575.00

1949 Bowman complete set of 240 cards. 5% range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 60% range from Ex to Ex-Mt, 15% Vg-Ex, and 20% lesser. This is an outstanding set. Most of the lower-grade cards appear to be Vg-Ex or Ex but trimmed; however, upon closer inspection it is clear these cards have been long ago handcut from a sheet, a quality that we have seen many times in the past with 1949 Bowmans. Occasionally uncut sheets were distributed in 1949, we believe to youngsters that lived near Bowman in Philadelphia, and these sheets were often cut up. It is supportive and interesting to note that all of the sheet-cut cards in this set are cards with numbers between #37 and #72, and these card numbers were all printed on the same sheet. We believe that a sheet with card numbers 37-72 was carefully cut up by a youngster in 1949 and used in the assembly of this set. Back to the rest of the set: This is an extremely attractive, very carefully assembled, very clean, high-grade set, rarely offered this nice as a complete set, with many rare high numbers and most key cards in particularly high grade. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Roy Campanella, Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, Robin Roberts, Early Wynn, and Bob Lemon. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Bickford (Vg-Ex), 11 Boudreau (miscut on back, otherwise Ex), 23 Doerr (Ex-Mt), 24 Musial (PSA EX-MT 6), 26 Kell (Ex-Mt), 27 Feller (PSA EX 5), 29 Kiner (Ex-Mt), 33 Spahn (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 36 Reese (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg), 46 Roberts RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 50 Robinson (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 60 Berra (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 65 Slaughter (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 70 Furillo RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 84 Campanella RC (PSA EX 5), 85 Mize NOF (Ex), 98 Rizzuto NNOF (Vg-Ex), 100 Hodges RC (20/80 T/B and with slight diamond cut, Ex), 110 Wynn RC (Ex), 111 Schoendienst (Vg-Ex), 162 Roe RC (Ex-Mt), 175 Appling (Vg-Ex), 194 Branca RC (Vg-Ex), 209 Keller (Ex), 210 Gordon (Ex bordering on Ex-Mt), 214 Ashburn RC (Gd-Vg), 224 Paige (PSA EX-MT 6), 225 Coleman RC (Vg-Ex), 226 Snider RC (PSA VG-EX 4), 229 Lopat RC (Gd-Vg), 233 Doby (Vg-Ex), and 238 Lemon RC (Vg-Ex). Additional cards graded by PSA: #152 (PSA VG 3), 178 (PSA NM-MT 8), and 201 (PSA NM+ 7.5). This very impressive, carefully assembled, set, far superior to the average 1949 Bowman set, is strong, crisp, very clean, and in overall high grade. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, let alone in such high grade. With a few upgrades, particularly the thirty-six sheet-cut cards representing the second series, this is a set that could provide the foundation for a world-class 1949 Bowman set. Total 240 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $10,575.00
