1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25
Extremely attractive mid-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. The cards range in grade from Vg to Vg-Ex/Ex, with a few in slightly better condition (Ex). This full-color seventy-two-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, both of which are graded by PSA. Keys: #1 Miller (90/10 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 6 Hubbell (Vg/Vg-Ex), 8 Ott (Vg-Ex/Ex), 10 Vaughan (Vg/Vg-Ex), 13 Foxx (Ex on the front, the back has an error with #36 McCosky bio printed on reverse), 14 Williams (PSA VG-EX 4), 15 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 18 Greenberg (20/80 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), 19 Gehringer (Vg-Ex), 20 Ruffing (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 39 Henrich (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 54 Reese RC (Vg-Ex/Ex), 60 Klein (Vg-Ex/Ex), 61 V. DiMaggio (Vg), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg-Ex/Ex), 64 Doerr (Ex), 70 Dickey (70/30 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 71 J. DiMaggio (PSA EX 5), and 72 Gomez (Vg-Ex). One of the great things about card collecting is that the classic card sets can be collected in any condition, on any budget. This set may be far from Mint, but it is a still a very attractive set, offers an outstanding value, and is a relatively much more affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this very popular prewar gum issue. The SMR value for just the two PSA graded cards (#14 Williams and 71 DiMaggio, not including the 70 ungraded cards) is $2,200. Total 72 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
