1939 R303-B Goudey Premium Near-Complete Set (23/24)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00
Issued in 1939 by Goudey Gum, and catalogued R303-B in the ACC, this large format (4-3/4 x 7-3/8 inches) set is printed on thin stock and was issued both in black and white, as well as sepia. Offered is an exceptional high-grade near-complete set (23 of 24, missing just Lombardi for completion), all of the black-and-white variety (the sepia variety are catalogued R303-A). Goudey selected the greatest stars of the day for inclusion in this instructional set (the reverse features playing tips on the finer points of the game). Rarely does a set have such a high concentration of major stars. More than half the players featured are members of the Hall of Fame: Appling (Ex), Cronin (Vg-Ex), Dickey (Vg/Vg-Ex), DiMaggio (Ex), Feller (Ex-Mt), Foxx (Vg), Gomez (Ex), Greenberg (Vg-Ex/Ex), Herman (Ex), Ott (Vg/Vg-Ex), Simmons (Vg/Vg-Ex), and Vaughan (Vg-Ex/Ex). The balance of the premiums grade Excellent overall (with three slightly lesser). This is a tremendous set of R303-B Goudey premiums, clean and crisp across the board, and it should be stressed that all have an Excellent or better appearance (many appear at a glance to be Near Mint to Mint, and those graded less than Ex have only an extremely minor flaw that is not immediately apparent, perhaps a tiny crease). For years this has been one of the most overlooked of all 1930s gum issues because grading companies simply did not have holders for this set, but that has very recently changed with the introduction of larger-format holders by SGC which now allow for professional grading and encapsulation of this issue. Total 23 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
