1889 A35 Goodwin Round Album

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $7,050.00

The "Goodwin Round Album," as it is known in collecting circles, was available only by mail in exchange for coupons packed with Goodwin Tobacco. The baseball-shaped album is comprised of nine pages featuring players, an advertising page, plus two covers, all attached by a round metal clasp. Four pages each feature a single beautiful full-color portrait (Anson, Kelly, Ward, and Comiskey). Five pages picture four players each, including Hall of Famers Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe, Roger Connor, John Ward, and Jim O'Rourke, in full-length poses. The reverse of each page contains player records and game schedules printed in blue. The outstanding graphics and its extreme rarity make it one of the premiers of all nineteenth-century printed baseball items, and the most desirable of all pre-1900 tobacco premium albums. Offered is a low- to mid-grade example of this most desirable nineteenth-century tobacco premium album. The covers and two player pages (Anson and Welch-Ward-Ewing-Keefe) have been torn from the clasp; the remaining pages remain attached to the original clasp but could easily be separated if desired. Of the eight pages attached by the clasp (seven of which are player pages, one is an advertising page), the four-player page with O'Rourke has tearing near the clasp (almost detached from the tear), and each of the other pages has a crease (which is very heavy on the back couple pages) near the clasp from being opened as a book for viewing, instead of fanned as intended. Despite the problems from handling, the pages and images are bright, crisp, and clean, with beautiful colors. Several of the interior pages are virtually Mint aside from the crease near the clasp, most others will still display strongly. The two separated player pages and covers are technically in Poor condition, as is the top page that is attached by the clasp. The other pages are in Very Good condition. Diameter: 8 inches. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $7,050.00
