1933 R319 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $23,500.00
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Exceptionally high-grade example of the ideal classic Babe Ruth bubble-gum card, featuring the Babe in his classic follow-through batting pose. Goudey must have also realized this was the most classic pose as, of all the cards in the set, this is the card they chose to double print when replacing the missing card #106 during production. This continues to be his most popular and most recognizable baseball card. While there are many 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth cards in the hands of collectors, in various conditions, surprisingly few have ever been graded at such a high level. As of this writing, of the 702 examples of #144 Ruth graded by PSA, only thirty-two have been graded NM-MT 8, and only four higher in the entire history of PSA (the four higher are graded MINT 9; there are no 10s). Because of being double-printed by Goudey (there were exactly twice as many Ruth #144s printed as other cards in the same series), this card also represents the best value among the four Babe Ruth cards in the 1933 Goudey set. The offered card has four square corners with white borders and flawless colors; Ruth's image is centered slightly towards the bottom right. Crisp and clean, both front and back, with an extremely boldly printed reverse. Considered by many to represent the best value in high-grade among the four Babe Ruth cards in the 1933 Goudey set, this card is always highly sought after, on any short list of the hobby's most classic cards, and, of course, very rare to find in such high grade. SMR value is $18,750. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000+. SOLD FOR $23,500.00
