Lot # 528 (of 1673)   < Previous Lot | Next Lot >

1931 W517 #4 Babe Ruth and #20 Babe Ruth (2 cards)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00

The 1931 W517 set features two cards of Babe Ruth and this lot presents both of these classics as a pair. Card #4 pictures Babe Ruth throwing and card #20 features his portrait. Ruth is the only player in the fifty-four card set to be honored with two cards. Each is graded and encapsulated VG-EX 4 by PSA. Only one example of each card has ever been graded higher by PSA. These are two of Ruth’s most unusual cards, and are much appreciated by collectors for being so different in dimension and design from most other cards featuring Ruth's likeness. They are also from an unusual era, as W517 is one of the very few card sets issued after the popular strip cards of the 1920s but just before the bubble-gum cards of the early 1930s. The popular W517 large-style strip card (3 x 4 inches) issue was originally sold in vertical strips of three, which were intended to be hand cut by youngsters. Because of their method of issue, cards from this set are often found in somewhat rough condition (miscut, creases, back damage, etc.). This pair is far nicer than usually found for this condition-sensitive issue. These two cards are fresh, clean, nicely cut, very impressive examples. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
