1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $8,812.50

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. This extremely rare sample card from the Yum Yum Tobacco series of 1888 features an extraordinarily bold "in action" woodcut of legendary Hall of Famer John Clarkson (throwing), pitcher, with the Boston Nationals. 1888 was Clarkson's first season with Boston, having spent his prior four Major League seasons with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. This is a magnificent example from this rare issue of one of the nineteenth century's greatest stars. Advanced collectors have always appreciated the mystique of the rarest pre-1900 baseball card issues. Whether it is because of the brand name, their unusual look, their extreme rarity, or a combination of all of these factors, few card issues are more highly prized than Yum Yum Tobacco cards among the most serious die-hard collectors. Issued by the August Beck Company of Chicago. This is a very attractive example, with even corner wear, some very light soiling front and back, and no creases. We sometimes grade cards a little differently than the grading services. We grade this particular card just slightly more conservatively than SGC at Vg/Vg-Ex. Incredibly, we found this card among a group of newly discovered original-owner N172 Old Judges consigned to this auction, and it is easily the key highlight of the collection. Naturally, we were shocked to find a Yum Yum in a collection of Old Judges, let alone a magnificent key Hall of Famer. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $8,812.50
