1926-1929 Exhibit-style Cards Including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (8)
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75
Collection of eight 1926-1929 postcard-back Exhibit-style cards highlighted by key Hall of Famers Babe Ruth (batting) and Lou Gehrig (batting, plain background), both graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Ruth and Gehrig are each bright and crisp, with virtually perfect image quality, no creases, and just the slightest hint of corner wear (very little corner wear on the Ruth, which looks Ex). Both cards have never been mailed and have no writing on their traditional postcard reverses. These majestic cards are among the most impressive looking of all Ruth and Gehrig cards, and ironically represent one of the best values of all cards of these legends as well. The 1926-1929 Exhibit-style cards look like Exhibit cards and were sold in penny arcade machines like Exhibit cards, but were in fact issued by an unknown competitor of The Exhibit Supply Company. While the company that issued this set is not identified on the cards, it is interesting to note that the cards do have text, in a small font, which reads "Not To Be Used in Exhibit Machines" on the reverse. It is likely that this warning was the result of some type of legal settlement between the two companies regarding the use of Exhibit machines. Also included are five additional baseball players (Barnes, Faber, Heilmann, McQuillan with pencil mark in background, and C. Williams) from this set and one boxer (Jack Dempsey, Vg). All are in the same high quality Vg-Ex condition unless noted, and all have no writing on their reverses and none have been mailed. Total 8 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
