1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Series SGC Graded (2)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25

The 1911 M131 Baltimore News Newsboys Series set is an incredibly rare baseball card issue. Presented are two Hall of Famers from the set: Nap Lajoie and Johnny Evers. This set is very similar in design to George Close Candy, but with each player image printed against a light blue background on the front, and with the checklist-reverse featuring advertising along the top, which reads, “The Baltimore News Newsboys Series – Prize of $1.00 to First 35 Boys Getting Full Set of the Following." Based on the reverse advertising, this set may have been a special promotion produced for and marketed exclusively to The Baltimore News newsboys. This type of severely limited distribution would certainly account for their extreme rarity. Jefferson Burdick gave this E94 related issue its own catalog number (M131) in the American Card Catalog because they are clearly a distinct issue from E94. Both cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC: Evers (FAIR 20) and Lajoie (Authentic). Though technically in low grade, each is still a very attractive card, and each has a very clean reverse, which is especially desirable for sample cards from this set. The Lajoie card could not receive a numerical grade from SGC due to a small amateur repair to a tear on the upper right edge. We grade this card Fr-Gd. The Evers has a few creases and rounded corners but is still a great looking card. Both cards are bright and clean. Two key Hall of Famers from one of the rarest prewar issues in all of card collecting. Total 2 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406.25
