1909-1911 M101-2 The Sporting News Collection (42) Including Cobb and Wagner
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25
Collection of forty-two M101-2 Sporting News supplements, highlighted by twenty Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Christy Mathewson. This is a newly discovered group that has never before been seen in the collecting world and has been saved by chance by a noncollecting family. The collection was acquired back in 1975 when our consignor's father, who worked at a printing plant in Erie, Pennsylvania, discovered the group in a storage room when the plant was being shut down. The collection consists of the following: 1909: Bresnahan (HOF), Young (HOF)/Criger, Mathewson (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Magee, Chance (HOF), Walsh (HOF), Rucker, Wagner (HOF), Jennings (HOF), Clarke (HOF), B. Johnson (HOF), Comiskey (HOF), E. Collins (HOF), McAleer, Detroit Team, Speaker (HOF), Brown (HOF), Chase, Leach, and Bush. 1910: Evers (HOF), Adams, Joss (HOF), Overall, Crawford (HOF), Merkle, Mullin, Konetchy, Gibson/Raymond, Johnson (HOF)/Street, Kling, Baker (HOF), McLean, Coombs, Taylor, and Ford. 1911: Thomas, Milan, Bescher, and Barry. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This lot is highlighted by Ty Cobb, one of the keys to the M101-2 set. The Cobb premium was issued on August 12, 1909, and features a young Ty Cobb holding his bat with the Detroit Americans. Cobb has a tiny tear on the left border and the ink notation "6B" in red in the upper right corner. On the reverse are pencil notations. While technically in Good condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a strong Excellent appearance. The forty-one remaining premiums (with few exception) range from Gd to Vg-Ex, averaging Very Good overall. M101-2 Sporting News premiums are large, fragile, and easily damaged. For this issue, this is a very impressive-looking group. There are only 100 M101-2s in the entire set. Dimensions: each approximately 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 42 supplements. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
