1910 S74 Baseball Tobacco Silks Ty Cobb With Ad Back
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,700.00
Absolutely stunning, crisp, ultra high-grade 1910 S74 "White" Tobacco Silk of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb in virtually Mint condition, with its original advertising back paper perfect and intact. This incredible newly-discovered speciman (it has never before been seen in the collecting world) was saved by chance by a noncollecting family. The family had a total of 64 S74 silks, all of extraordinarily high quality. This Cobb is arguably the prize of the collection, and so we are offering it separately. The balance of the collection is offered in this auction as a separate lot. S74 silks are related to the T205 Gold Border series, and share the same basic player designs. There are two very similar S74 sets, one ever so slightly larger than the other. The centerpiece in each set is Ty Cobb, and this lot features the highest-grade example of the slightly smaller style of Cobb that we have ever seen. This smaller style "white silk" still has the Helmar Cigarettes paper backing attached to the reverse as originally issued (usually these advertising backs are missing), and is virtually free of all fraying, which is such a common flaw with tobacco silks. The silk is perfectly bright, clean, and unimprovably crisp. A slight horizontal crease visible on the paper backing of this white variety is standard for this issue - it is how they are supposed to be - due to their method of issue (S74s were folded when issued, creating this light crease on the paper backing). We contacted PSA and SGC about grading this gem, but both companies do not yet encapsulate S74s. The rationale apparently is that the holders are not properly designed to encapsulate silks. When dealing with S74 examples with original advertising back papers intact, such as this example, we would think this design issue would not apply. It wasn't that long ago that T3s were not encapsulated. Eventually the grading companies will encapsulate S74s. When they do, this example will grade extremely high for the issue. This Ty Cobb silk represents the key of the S74 "White" Silks set and is in virtually Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+ SOLD FOR $4,700.00
