1887-1888 N172 Old Judge Hall of Famer Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $3,818.75
Collection of five Hall of Famers from the N172 Old Judge series, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. 1) Tim Keefe (pitching, right hand head high – SGC VG 40). Very clean and attractive example with an 1887 copyright date. Superb photo quality, no creases, very light, even corner wear. 2) Tim Keefe (pitching pose, right hand at back – SGC FAIR 20). Without reference to ink notations and soiled reverse, this card would grade Vg. Outstanding contrast. 3) Jim O'Rourke (3d B., N.Y's – SGC VG 40) with the New York Giants in a catching pose. Clean both front and back, with a crystal-clear image and excellent contrast. This card has virtually no top border and a slight tilt to the picture. This is a very attractive solid Vg example. 4) John Ward (sliding – SGC VG/EX 50) featured in a horizontal sliding pose with left hand raised. Like the portrait and double-player cards in the series, the horizontal cards in the Old Judge set are very distinctive and have always been an extremely popular subset in the N172 Old Judge series. One of the most unusual of the ten poses of Ward in the Old Judge set. Sharp photo quality, no creases, and even corner wear. 5) Smiling Mickey Welch (right hand head high - SGC VG 40). Welch's name is misspelled as "Welsh" on this card. This example is well centered, with outstanding contrast, evenly rounded corners, and a crease visible only on the reverse. This is an extremely impressive collection of mid-grade N172 Old Judge Hall of Famers with tremendous eye appeal. These five cards were among the highlights from a larger original-owner collection of Old Judges, all of which are offered elsewhere in several lots in this auction. This lot represents a tremendous opportunity to acquire an exceptional group of key Old Judges at a fraction of what such attractive examples would sell for without the mostly minor imperfections which have affected their SGC grades. Total 5 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
