1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $940.00

Graded G-VG 2.5 by GAI. Rare E95 Philadelphia Caramel of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants. This is an exceptional mid-grade example of one of Matty's most classic cards. We enjoy presenting the occasional card such as this that offers an outstanding opportunity to acquire an extraordinary vintage card without spending a fortune. Mathewson is one of the keys to this scarce caramel-card set issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. The set was almost certainly inspired by the great success that tobacco companies were having with their cards. It is especially noteworthy to many collectors that cards from this set were not reissued by other manufacturers, a practice that was so widespread with other “E” card issues. The designs used in E95 are unique to this set. These cards have a very distinctive look to them and the artwork is definitely a cut above their rivals of the time. Due to the thin stock on which they are printed, these cards are rarely found in high grade. This example of Mathewson has a far superior appearance than suggested by its technically accurate mid-grade. The card is bright and crisp, with virtually flawless registration, even wear to the corners, some minor creases (only one breaks the paper in the upper right corner), and a boldly printed checklist for the set on the back. It is interesting to note Mathewson’s name is misspelled “Matthewson” on this card. This is an extremely attractive Gd-Vg example of one of Mathewson's most striking cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $940.00
