1909-1911 T206 Cy Young Bare Hand - Ghost Back
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Graded EX 5 by PSA. Bare hand showing pose. High-grade classic card of Cy Young from the most popular tobacco-card set of the 1910 era. It is one of the most recognizable of all vintage cards and one of the most popular cards in the entire T206 set. In addition to being in very high grade, this particular example is all the more noteworthy as the reverse has a striking ghost image of Young. It appears to us (though we are not certain) that the black print neatly transferred onto the reverse during the printing process at the factory, and that this "wet transfer" occurred when sheets were stacked one on top of another before fully drying when printed. This has created a “shadow" or "ghost image” of Young on the reverse that is identical to the pose on the front of the card. It is possible that the reverse image was somehow accidentally added by the printing press, somehow related to early press preparation. One experienced T206 collector we showed this card to insists that the printing on the back somehow bled through the card, because the back "ghost" image is absolutely perfectly aligned with the front image. Whatever the explanation, we do not recall ever seeing a reverse ghost image of this quality on a T206. This is a fascinating and extremely rare factory printing anomaly. This card has very strong eye appeal, both front and back. The colors on the front are bright and Young’s image is perfectly focused. The unusual “shadow” image on the reverse is not multicolor; it appears to be black and white. The centering is 40/60 top to bottom and all four corners are square with a touch of wear. The reverse is perfectly clean with bold blue print contrasting sharply against the “ghost image.” This is a very interesting and unusual variety of this classic Cy Young card. The SMR value for this assigned grade is $1,150. It is hard for us to put an estimate on such a unique card, but we believe the market will reward this card with a premium for its distinctive rare-back variety. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
