Circa 1910 T205 and T206 Tobacco Card Collection (142)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $5,287.50

Impressive collection of 142 1910-era tobacco cards consisting of thirty-six T205 "Gold Borders" and 106 T206 "White Borders." Included are twenty-six Hall of Famers (among them three Cobbs, two Mathewsons, Johnson, and Young). These cards are part of the Rochester, New York collection which recently surfaced, which was highlighted by an astounding thirty-six Clement Bros. Bread cards. The entire collection, which is presented in several lots in this auction, was saved by the father of our consignor, himself now an older gentleman. His family originally lived in Rochester, New York and his father personally got these cards in 1911. 1) T205 Gold Borders (36 cards): Four cards are Vg, four are Gd, and twenty-eight Pr-Fr including Cicotte (Black Sox), Gray (stats on back), Jennings, Johnson, Latham ("A. Latham" on back), McGraw, and Young. 2) T206 White Borders (106 cards): Eighteen cards are Vg including Chance (red, Sovereign), Mathewson (portrait, Sovereign), Tinker (bat off), Willis (bat, Sovereign); nineteen Gd-Vg including Brown (Chicago, Sovereign), Cobb (red), Evers (Chicago), Kelley; twenty-four Gd including Chance (yellow, Polar Bear), Cobb (bat on, Sovereign), Lajoie (portrait, Sovereign), Mathewson (dark cap, Sovereign), Waddell (portrait, Sovereign), two Wallace (Sovereign backs); forty-five Pr-Fr including Cobb (green, borders completely trimmed off), Evers (Chicago), Joss (portrait), Waddell (throwing), Wallace (portrait), Willis (portrait), Willis (throwing). The backs are almost all Sovereign but also included are a few Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Tolstoi, and Polar Bear. Tobacco cards in low- to mid-grade condition represent perhaps the best value among all vintage baseball cards. They don't cost a fortune but capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting as well (some would argue better!) than more expensive higher-grade examples. This is a very substantial collection of tobacco cards from two of the 1910 era's most popular and classic sets. Total 142 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
