1886 J. Wood Studio Cabinet - Roger Connor
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Rare (very likely unique) cabinet card, produced in 1886 by noted baseball photographer Joseph Wood, picturing Roger Connor of the New York Giants. The formal studio shot features Connor in uniform and pictures him from the waist up. Sophisticated card collectors will instantly recognize that the photo offered here is the very image used to produce Connor's tobacco card in the rare 1886 N167 Old Judge issue. It is also fascinating to note that this photo was obviously taken at the very same sitting, literally within seconds, as that which was used to produce the rare 1887 Kalamazoo Bats New York player card of Connor, with an alternate shot of Connor wearing a cap used in that set. The photographer’s name and address appear in print along the base of the mount (“J. Wood, Photo – 208 Bowery, N.Y.”). The photo displays emulsions that have left it with varying degrees and shades of toning. Light wear is evident along the border and corner areas. The card displays a small area of surface paper loss on the reverse from having once been removed from an album, and appears to have been professionally cleaned. Encapsulated and labeled “Authentic" by SGC. This is a fascinating, and very likely unique, photographic cabinet card by Joseph Wood, one of the premier studio photographers of the era, with a direct connection to the rarest style of Kalamazoo Bats cards, and featuring the very image used to produce Connor's card in the 1886 N167 series, the very first Old Judge baseball-card set ever issued. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,350.00
