Circa 1910 Christy Mathewson PC758 Postcard and T5 Pinkerton-Related Scorecard (2)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75
Offered here are two rare Christy Mathewson cards, each of which pictures him in uniform. The first is a PC758 Max Stein real photo postcard capturing Mathewson warming up on the sideline as a member of the New York Giants. The photographer’s credit, “Max Stein, Chi.,” appears in white lettering. This is one of a series of Max Stein postcards issued over a period of several years in the teens, though based upon the uniform style worn by Mathewson, the actual photo used dates between the years 1904 and 1907. The printed caption “Christy Mathewson – New York – Natl League” appears at the top. The postcard (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has not been mailed and aside from a tiny corner chip in the lower right is in overall Excellent condition. The second card is not a postcard, though it is similar to one at a glance, and in fact has a preprinted baseball scorecard on the reverse. The front features a photo of Mathewson in a pitching pose as a member of the Giants. This pose and the design of the card is very similar to that of the 1911 T5 Pinkerton Tobacco cabinet-card series. A rectangular panel on the front features the number “251” and the printed caption “Christy Mathewson, P. – New York Giants, N. L.” Based upon the uniform style worn by Mathewson, the image photo dates between the years 1908 and 1910. The scorecard has not been filled out and the front displays light surface wear. Very Good to Excellent condition. Total 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
