Circa 1950 Hopalong Cassidy Rarities Collection Including 1952 Hopalong-Aid Set
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50
Hopalong Cassidy, a fictional character created by author Clarence E. Mulfor in 1904, enjoyed a successful run in both print and film, but it wasn't until actor William Boyd brought the character to television in 1949 that "Hoppy" became a national phenomenon. Hopalong Cassidy was the first Western series on television and the popularity of the show resulted in an unprecedented marketing boom. Offered here are three rare Hopalong Cassidy items dating from the height of his popularity in the early 1950s. 1) Hopalong Cassidy birthday card (4.5 x 5.5 inches) in Near Mint condition. This is a fascinating birthday card for card collectors as included in its design is an actual unopened one-cent wax pack of 1950 Bowman Hopalong Cassidy cards, which is taped inside as issued. The front of the card even references the pack ("Well, by gum! It's Hoppy!"). The original white envelope accompanies (Nr-Mt). 2) Extraordinarily rare complete set of Hopalong-Aid picture cards, complete in its original mailing envelope. The set is comprised of twelve cards (3 x 4 inches), each picturing "Hoppy" in a different pose and featuring his facsimile signature on the front. The original mailing fold-over envelope is postmarked "Mar 25 1952," and the reverse features a picture of Cassidy as well as a promotional pitch for "Hopalong-Aid" (a powdered drink). The rarity of this set cannot be overstated. Single cards from this set are hardly ever seen and according to our very knowledgeable consignor this is the only complete set in the hobby (at the very least we have never seen another). Further distinguishing the set is its condition. Aside from some extremely minor corner wear to a few of the cards, the set (and accompanying mailing envelope that closes with flap) is in overall Near Mint condition. 3) The final item is a paper advertising insert or package design produced by Topps advertising for "Hoppy's Wagon Wheel Pops." The insert (10.5 x 10.5 inches) features a portrait photo of Cassidy in the center. A copyright date (1950) and the Topps credit appears in the bottom right corner. This colorful insert is printed on thin paper stock. We have never seen this before. We have been told that one came with each carton of Topps "Hoppy's Wagon Wheel Pops" but cannot verify exactly how this was distributed. This is a very interesting, substantial, and early Topps Hoppy-endorsed product-related advertising piece. Tiny edge tear and a few light surface wrinkles, otherwise in Excellent condition. Total: 3 items. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,762.50
