Circa 1910 T62 Fortune Series and T112 Toast Series Printers Proof Sheets (2)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $587.50
Two extraordinarily rare uncut proof sheets featuring cards from two circa 1910 nonsport tobacco issues. These are incredible! We can count on one hand how many 1910-era tobacco-card proof sheets we have ever seen. If these two sheets featured baseball tobacco cards, they would cause a riot. The cards featured on these sheets are from two of the most beautiful nonsport tobacco-card sets of the era. How these survived is unknown, but clearly they were saved by someone involved with the printing of these sets. Each sheet is perfect for framing. These are proof sheets with blank backs, printer color bars in the wide margins, and without the final captions added. It is likely that when these cards were printed in production quantities, they were printed on much larger sheets. The colors are extraordinary. Uncut tobacco-card proof sheets from 1910 are virtually nonexistent. These are special nonsport tobacco-card items. 1) 1910 T62 “Fortune Series.” Issued with Turkish Trophy Cigarettes, the set is entitled "Fortune Series.” Each card is slightly larger than a typical insert card (2-5/8 x 3-1/4 inches) and features a beautiful colorful lithograph scene, each with five different fortunes. This 12-card proof sheet has a blank back, and has printer's color bars in the extra wide margins. A few insignificant creases in the large margins and 0.25-inch tear on the right edge. The actual cards are in Mint condition. Dimensions: 12 x 14.25 inches. The uncut sheet is accompanied by an example of an issued card. 2) 1910 T112 “Toast Series” Group Four: Girls and Men. Issued with Mogul Cigarettes, the set is entitled "Toast Series.” Each card is slightly larger than a typical insert card (1-15/16 x 2-11/16 inches) and features a beautiful, colorful lithograph of a woman figure relating to a specific country, each with five different toasts. The text of the toasts are not printed on the cards on this proof sheet, which was obviously intended only to proof artwork, colors, and card design. This 13-card proof sheet is blank-backed, and has printer's color bars in the extra wide margins. Minor creases in the large margins and a heavy corner crease in the upper left. The actual cards are in Mint condition. Dimensions: 10 x 12.5 inches. Two extraordinary early twentieth-century tobacco-card proof sheets. Total 2 sheets Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
