1938 R69 “Horrors of War” Original Artwork Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Collection of five original artworks from Gum, Inc.'s "Horrors of War" series, each encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA. Gum Inc.'s "Horrors of War" series is perhaps the most famous of all nonsport issues. These are the actual original artworks used to produce the "Horrors of War" bubble-gum cards. The sensational and often gruesome artwork of the "Horrors of War" set created a tremendous stir when these cards were issued in 1938, literally putting Gum, Inc. on the map, and setting the stage for many successful years of card production. It is a miracle that many of the original artworks to this set have survived. All of these artworks originate from the family of Charles Steinbacher, the art director for Gum, Inc., and have been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world over the past decade since their discovery. These five original artworks were used to produce the following five cards in the classic R69 "Horrors of War" nonsport card set: #27 "Mobs Add Terror to Shanghai Shambles," 68 "Rebel Howitzers Attack in Snowstorm," 76 "Warning of An Air Raid in China," 120 "Italian Artillery Attacks Amba Aradam," and 128 "Chinese Universities Flee from War." Like all "Horrors of War" artworks, these artworks measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches each, the exact same size as the issued card, and are executed in watercolor on artist's board. All are in overall Very Good condition, with minor flaws characteristic of "Horrors of War" artworks including production-related glue stains on the blank reverses. Since the sale of the largest known group of "Horrors of War" artworks as a collection in 2007, which apparently is staying in one place in a private collection, original "Horrors of War" artworks have virtually vanished from the collecting landscape, making this offering all the more noteworthy. Each artwork has accompanied by a reprint of its corresponding issued "Horrors of War" card. Total 5 artworks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
