1948 Bowman Basketball Near-Complete Set (64 of 72)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50

85% range from Vg-Ex/Ex to Ex-Mt, 15% Vg-Ex (includes a few lesser). Near-complete set of 1948 Bowman Basketball includes #69 George Mikan, the king of all basketball cards. Sixty-four of the 72 cards, missing just eight cards (#29, 37, 39, 43, 54, 55, 59, 64) for completion. The 1948 Bowman Basketball series is particularly significant as this was the first set ever issued devoted exclusively to basketball. The George Mikan card in this set is widely recognized as the most sought-after and valuable of all basketball cards. This 1948 issue was the only basketball set Bowman ever produced. Cards from this set are extremely hard to find in high grade in part because these cards (like 1949 Bowman baseball) often naturally have soft corners due to the quality of the paper stock on which they are printed. Keys: #1 Calverley RC (Ex), 9 Phillip RC (HOF, Ex), 10 Davies RC (HOF, Vg-Ex), 32 Holzman RC (HOF, Ex), 34 Fulks RC (HOF, Vg-Ex/Ex), 38 Jeanette RC (HOF, Vg-Ex/Ex), 43 Halbert RC (missing), 46 McKinney RC (80/20 L/R otherwise Ex-Mt), 48 Sadowski RC (70/30 L/R otherwise Nr/Mt), 52 Simmons RC (30/70 L/R otherwise Ex-Mt), 58 Risen RC (HOF, 25/75 otherwise Ex-Mt), 66 Pollard RC (HOF, Ex-Mt), 69 Mikan RC (HOF, Vg-Ex due to a hint of a stain on the left border, and a little corner wear, and a little border toning in the upper right, still a nice looking card with an Excellent appearance at a glance), and 72 Braun RC (Ex). This is the first and only basketball set Bowman ever issued. It apparently did not sell well, as Bowman never followed up with another basketball set. The set includes the rookie cards of all of the major stars of the era. 1948 Bowman Basketball is well known for production-quality issues, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is a very attractive, clean, and overall fairly high-grade near-complete set of this significant basketball issue. Total 64 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
