1959-1960 Jim Taylor Green Bay Packers Signed Game-Used Jersey

Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $22,325.00

Rare and significant Green Bay Packers home jersey worn by Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor in 1959-1960. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS, with only one other Jim Taylor Green Bay Packers jersey graded at this level. This museum-quality garment is a sight to behold and exhibits the type of wear one would expect to find on a jersey worn by Taylor, one of the most punishing running backs in NFL history. The aqua-green dureen jersey features the number "31" on the front, back, and each sleeve. Each numeral is appliquéd in white-cotton twill. A "Wilson 46" label appears on the left front tail. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including slight fading to the material, numerous team repairs, and two unrepaired tears to the numeral "1" on the reverse. The majority of the team repairs, made in both white and green stitching, appear on the reverse, the largest of which measures four inches in length. The number of repaired tears on this jersey is indicative of Taylor's bruising style of running. When Packer's coach Vince Lombardi was once asked how Taylor compared to legendary Browns running back Jim Brown he stated that "Jim Brown will give you that leg and then take it away from you. Jim Taylor will give it to you and then ram it through your chest!" And that's precisely what Taylor did, for ten NFL seasons, all but one of which was spent with the Green Bay Packers. Taylor joined the Packers in 1958, but saw limited duty his first year. It wasn't until 1959, with the arrival of Vince Lombardi and his "run to daylight" philosophy, that Taylor emerged as one of the game's top rushers. From 1960 through 1964 Taylor rushed for over 1,000 yards a season, including a League and career high 1,474 in 1962. He also scored a then-record nineteen rushing touchdowns in 1962 which helped earn him NFL Player of the Year honors at season's end. Taylor helped lead the Packers to four NFL Championships and one Super Bowl victory during his nine seasons with the club. He finished his career with 8,597 rushing yards and a total of ninety-three touchdowns. He was elected to the Football Hall of Fame in 1976. This an extremely early Jim Taylor jersey and one that dates from the advent of the legendary 1960s Green Bay Packers dynasty. This is, very simply, one of the finest 1960s Hall of Fame jerseys in existence. Ideally, Taylor has personally attested to its former use by inscribing the jersey on the front and providing a signed LOA. Taylor's black-marker inscription (grading "9/10") on the front reads "Jim Taylor - 1959 + 1960 Game Used Jersey." The one-page typed letter, signed in black marker ("10'), includes a complete physical description of the jersey and concludes "I, Jim Taylor, have personally inspected and autographed this jersey on December 14, 1996, and certify it as my game used jersey from the 1959 and 1960 seasons." Green Bay Packers jerseys dating from the 1960s are quite scarce, especially those worn by prominent team members such as Taylor. To date, only seven 1960s Packers jerseys are listed in the MEARS census. This shirt has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. LOA Jim Taylor. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+ SOLD FOR $22,325.00
