500 Home Run Club Pro-Model Bat Collection: R. Jackson, Schmidt, McGwire, Sheffield MEARS (4)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75
Collection of four different pro-model bats, each issued to either a current member of baseball's elite 500 Home Run Club (Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, and Mark McGwire, respectively) or a future member of that elite fraternity (Gary Sheffield). 1) 1982 Reggie Jackson Adirondack Pro-Model Bat. The black, white-ring, block-letter model "381 B" bat displays heavy use including ball, stitch, rack, and cleat marks. Jackson's uniform number ("44") is written on the knob in silver paint pen. The year code ("02") is stamped in the knob. Jackson has signed the bat in silver paint pen (grading "10") on the side of the barrel. Length: 34.5. Weight: 33 ounces. Graded A7 by MEARS (5 point base grade plus 1 point for use and 1 point for the number on the knob). 2) 1981 Mike Schmidt Adirondack Pro-Model Bat. The red-ring signature model "MS20D" bat displays light use including ball, stitch, and rack marks on the barrel and light pine-tar residue on the handle. Schmidt's uniform number ("20") is written in black marker on the knob. The year code ("1") is stamped on the knob. Schmidt has signed the bat in blue Sharpie ("10") on the sweet spot of the barrel, "Mike Schmidt 1981 MVP." Schmidt won his second consecutive MVP Award (of an eventual three) in the strike-shortened season of 1981 by virtue of his .316 batting average, 31 home runs, and 91 RBI. Length: 35.25 inches. Weight: 33.8 ounces. A Major League Baseball authentication hologram label appears on the barrel. Graded A7 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 1 point for use and 1 point for the number on the knob). 3) 1998 Mark McGwire Rawlings Pro-Model Bat. The red-ring block-letter model "MAC25" bat displays light use including ball, stitch, and rack marks on the barrel and light pine-tar residue on the handle. The year code ("98") is stamped on the knob. McGwire broke Roger Maris' single-season home run record in 1998, finishing the year with an astonishing 70 home runs. Length: 34.37 inches. Weight: 33.6 ounces. Graded A6 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 1 point for use). 4) 2006 Gary Sheffield Rawlings Pro-Model Bat. The black, silver-ring, block letter (full name) model "170B" bat displays moderate use including ball, stitch, and rack marks on the barrel and light pine-tar residue on the handle. A large wrap of white tape encompasses nearly all of the knob and the base of the handle. Sheffield has personally attested to the bat's provenance by inscribing it in silver paint pen ("10') on the sweet spot of the barrel, "Gary Sheffield #11 - Game Used 2006." Although Sheffield used this bat in 2006, the year code on the knob ("05") indicates that it was manufactured in 2005. Sheffield batted .298 with 6 home runs and 25 RBI in 2006, a season in which he missed 123 games due to injury. Sheffield is twenty home runs shy of 500, and, barring any unforeseen injury, he will become a member of the 500 Home Run Club in 2008. A "Sheff 11 Authenticated" hologram label appears on the barrel. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 33.3 ounces. Graded A9 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 2 points for use and 2 points for the inscription). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Total: 4 bats. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
